Dossier
What the Hatchling is for.
The Hatchling is the smallest confirmed Substrate swarm unit: a quadruped that spawns from clutches of eggs and is recruited from the Assembly. Its role is to arrive in numbers and make single-target weapons spend time clearing expendable bodies.
The official faction reveal does not publish health or damage values for the Hatchling. That matters: any claim about exact Hatchling durability or damage at this stage would be an invention, not a data point.
How to use it
- Screen Reapers and Overminds. A Hatchling screen buys time for the units that actually project the damage.
- Force single-target weapons to waste shots on cheap bodies while your real force repositions or recovers shields.
- Pair swarm pressure with a second attack: the Hatchlings create the distraction, not necessarily the decisive blow.
How to answer it
- Use area damage and anti-swarm tools rather than feeding one high-damage weapon at a time.
- Attack the source. Clutch-of-Eggs units generate regeneration screens; removing the parent unit changes the swarm economy.
- Keep your expensive units moving so the swarm cannot surround and isolate them.
What we still do not know
- Health, damage, spawn rate and cost are not in the official reveal.
- The exact cap or lifetime of spawned Hatchlings may change at launch.
